Block Carving Event Recap

On Saturday, December 7, JETAARM hosted an engaging and hands-on Japanese block carving event at the Denver Library Ford-Warren Branch. The gathering brought together an enthusiastic group of 15 participants, including JET Program alumni, members of Denver’s broader Japanese cultural community, and others who discovered the event through Eventbrite or the library website. This blend of individuals created a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere, perfect for exploring the art of Japanese woodblock carving.

The event kicked off with an introduction to the history and cultural significance of woodblock printing in Japan, known as mokuhanga. Participants learned about the artistry behind iconic ukiyo-e prints, which have left a lasting legacy on Japanese and global art. This brief historical overview provided a fascinating context for the hands-on activities to follow and inspired participants as they prepared to create their own designs.

The highlight of the day was the carving workshop, led by the talented and knowledgeable Kate Gallagher, a cherished member of our community with extensive experience in block carving. Under Kate’s expert guidance, attendees learned how to use carving tools safely and effectively. They had the opportunity to design and carve their own linoleum blocks, which served as an accessible and beginner-friendly medium for exploring traditional techniques. By the end of the session, everyone had crafted their own unique blocks, perfect for creating beautiful prints.

This event was made possible through the generous support of several key partners. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Kate for sharing her expertise and providing hands-on instruction, helping participants bring their creative visions to life. Our sincere thanks also go to the Denver Library for providing a welcoming and well-equipped space, and to the Office of the Consulate General of Japan in Denver for their invaluable support in making this event a success.

Small, interactive events like this are the lifeblood of our JETAARM community. They offer opportunities to connect with one another while celebrating and immersing ourselves in Japanese culture. The energy and enthusiasm of our participants demonstrated the power of art to bring people together and foster cultural understanding. We are thrilled to have hosted such a meaningful and creative experience and look forward to organizing more events that highlight the richness of Japanese traditions.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this memorable day of learning and artistry. Be sure to follow JETAARM on social media and check our website regularly for updates on future events. We can’t wait to see you at our next cultural adventure!
